PROJECT XPEAKS

Climb & fly all 82 4000 m peaks
with the THETA ULS

With minimal equipment and no external support, Chrigel Maurer and Peter von Känel climbed all 82 4000-metre peaks in the Alps in 51 days on foot and by paraglider. Over the past few weeks, the two friends demonstrated their skills at an incredible pace and under challenging conditions, impressing with numerous magic moves.

The incredible statistics:

  • 39 active days, 12 rest days (10 due to bad weather)

  • 565 km hiked with a total of 71,645 vertical meters

  • 61 flights with a total of 61 h and 48 min of flight time

Congratulations, Chrigel and Peter!

On June 10th, the two friends set off from their hometown of Frutigen, Switzerland and made their way across the 4000-metre peaks of the Alps, from the Bernese Oberland through Valais to the Mont Blanc region. By combining mountaineering with paragliding, their mission was to push the limits of what is possible. With their landing back home in Frutigen on July 30th, they successfully completed their mission. More info

THETA ULS Experience

Chrigel Maurer 8x X-Alps Winner

„In mountaineering, conditions are very complex. Safety and simplicity are much more important than pure performance. That's why we chose the THETA ULS."

Peter von Känel Former Comp Pilot & Mountain Guide

"The THETA ULS has passed the ultimate test. There were several situations in high alpine terrain where I was very grateful for the simplicity of this wing."

Why THETA ULS?

Probably the most frequently asked question: Why is Chrigel Maurer flying a mid-B wing instead of the OMEGA ULS? For such a demanding project in the alpine high mountains with extremely challenging take-off and landing sites, turbulent conditions due to expected lee situations, etc., the XPeaks team ultimately decided in favour of equipment with easier handling and more safety reserves. The criterion of pure performance was given less weight.
